“Do you know the true reason my brother chose you as his champion? It’s because you are just... Like.... Me.”

Naturally, after seeing the movie Thor I had a million xover-doodles flying around in my head. It was perfect. Then, of course, later we have the Avengers, which has just renewed it.

One of the more frequent questions I get for Hitchups is “Why Thor?”. Surely, on the surface, Loki would be the obvious choice for choosing Hiccup as a champion?

I assure you a lot of thought went into it, and it goes deeper than simple similarities.

For a start, having Loki favor Hiccup seems too commonplace and thoughtless for me. While Hiccup is cunning and would rather fight with forethought and words, he's too much of a bleeding heart for Loki's taste. Loki would see his compassion as something that impedes ambition and would find Hiccup not worth the effort of his favor. Very rarely will Loki bother with humans, unless they really, really prove worth his time. Or prove fun to mess with (look at picture above for example).

Thor, on the other hand, pays plenty of attention to Midgard, being the protector of it and all.

Hiccup caught the attention of the gods with heroics, which is usually the way humans go about things. Hiccup's bravery (the gall of deciding to fly a dragon is both courageous and stupid), his stubbornness, and sheer daring caught Thor’s attention: Here was a human who defied tradition and took uncommon risks! What fun! How interesting!

Thus, Thor came to the arguably superficial conclusion to favor Hiccup because Hiccup was intelligent while possessing prized traits. He felt he was making a smart choice association for a guy who isn't known for his...cunning. It was a bit of a: “Look dad, look what I did! Making smart decisions here...' mentality. In all the years he holds Hiccup as his champion, he never comes to understand why Hiccup doesn't appreciate his favor. How can he? He's a god.

But it was more than Hiccup's attention grabbing shenanigans mixed with qualities Thor thought would be refreshing and beneficial to him. Thor chose Hiccup because of Hiccup’s similarities with Loki.

Thor wants to appease Loki. They're always harassing each other but while Thor treats everything like a big joke, Loki tends to take things more personally. This is a bit of an olive branch offering for Thor. He thinks he's pleasing his brother by choosing someone he deems similar to him.

Of course, Loki chooses to be offended by it, which leaves poor Hiccup is caught in the middle, never asking for any of it.

Just to be clear, Loki is not evil. He’s annoyed with Thor. Annoyed more by Hiccup, because Hiccup is slippery like a snake and escapes most of whatever’s thrown at him. He likes to pick on Hiccup, to harass and annoy him whenever he’s bored because, really, Hiccup’s just a specky mortal that Thor adores. And Thor continues to adore him, willfully ignoring the petulance and sometimes contempt Hiccup returns to him...which leads to silly interactions

In a way Loki even likes Hiccup. Like a little brother he want to constantly throttle but refrains out of some unwanted fondness he feel for him.

As we can see here, Loki is holding Hiccup in the air (easy for a god, ya know?). But, now that I look at it, Hiccup seems too 'long' and looks like he's just really tall. Whoooooops. D:

Also, Loki's clothing is a bitch. Hate clothes. Hate it.
