Medieval Modern Family

From left to right:
Stoick, Roan, Garik, Tsura, Hiccup, Lund, Astrid, Camicazi, Alivia, Big-Boobied Bertha

Stoick thinks he has the strongest grandchild. Big-Boobied Bertha thinks she has the strongest grandchild. Garik sadly informs Roan that Alivia wins. Camicazi shrugs and says it can only be expected that a Bog would beat out a Hooligan. Astrid scoffs at the very notion. Tsura snuggles next to Garik and smirks at Hiccup, who stares her down, unimpressed.

This line art took me as long as it looks like it did. I'm learning how to draw middle-aged people and it's been quite the experience. Have we ever seen a middle-aged Camicazi? Have we? No. We have not. And I’m in love with how she came out. I'm tempted to just color her and love her forever. Her and Tsura just look great for some reason. I like Hiccup as well.

A little bit of backstory perhaps?

_{Stoick and BB-Bertha still hold onto the rivalries of their generation and constantly bump bellies over who has the strongest grandchild (Roan and Alivia respectively). They also cling to old horned-helmet fashions. Bertha pops in on Berk lot trying to 'intervene' with Hiccup's involvement with her granddaughter's life, but the damage has been done. Stoick has become more complacent in his years and is much more jovial. It doesn't hurt that he secretly enjoys seeing Hiccup get frustrated with his children's shenanigans after the run-around Hiccup gave him years past.
Hiccup and Astrid are happily married for twenty years now. They've had their ups and downs but having children (especially kids like Garik and Roan) have taught them how to hold a united front.
Camicazi is still a wild and free woman of the sea. No amount of stink-eye from Astrid could keep her out of Hiccup's life. She gets along fine with Astrid now, though not as well as Bertha gets along with Astrid.
Alivia is a rare Bog Burglar with an active father. She loves dropping in on her brothers and flying off with them on adventures. She continually ignores her grandmother's warnings to stay away from Hiccup, thinking her views on men, fathers in particular, as "dated". She does what she wants, much to Stoick's approval, her father's bemusement, and her mother's exhaperation.
Tsura (pronounced "Zora") is a Roma woman whom Garik is "seeing", having found her on one of his misadventures South of Normandy. Hiccup disapproves immensely, not trusting her or her people (he's not exempt from prejudice, for reasons). She knows this, she's used to such an attitude, and instead of shying away chooses to flaunt Garik's interest in her to Hiccup in a smug fashion. This leaves him further annoyed.
Lund was an 'accident' child. Astrid got lax with the moon tea as she got older and was surprised to find herself pregnant after nearly a decade since her last child. She was tired by then, and instead of instilling the discipline she grew up with and gave her two oldest children, she allows Lund much more leeway. He becomes a bit of a Momma's boy because of that.
He's also forgotten about a lot. Sometimes because he's so removed age-wise from the rest of his generation. Sometimes because it's just funny.}


Well...that's just the tip of the iceberg. Any questions? I have the quirkiest of quirks in this universe painted out in my mind. Their relationships are too complicated for me to flood an A/N with so feel free to ask away!

While drawing this I had Arrested Development playing in the background. It was a great soundtrack for the atmosphere of this family. I listened to a little bit of this and a lot of this.

And this this is for when Garik and Roan get in one of their harmless scuffles.
And this is for when Roan walks into a room with the intent of wooing some ladies.
