The Roman Redress

                The Roman Redress

Opening...

Nearly a year after the events of How to Train your Dragon, and Berk is barely recognizable.  Humans and dragon live side-by-side, managing, after much trial and error, to find a symbiotic existence.   The interspecies peace is maintained by Hiccup and his personally-trained peers through the Dragon Training Academy.  Astrid and Hiccup have grown closer over time; their teetering relationship slowly drifts from uncertain to comfortable.    Things are well for the Hooligans but not quite smooth.  Already burdened by responsibilities no Viking has faced before, Hiccup’s father is now "gently" pressuring him to take on even more—the Becoming Chief sort of

Few know this, but there were two other canon-deviation fics I was tempted to write aside from Hitchups. One was more politically/deceptive inclined, the other was more action/romance.

This is the "poster" to one of them. You may see a couple familiar faces... and yes, I mean a couple. See if you can spot Hiccup. :meow:

They're all related in some way; even the original characters are more deeply involved in Hiccup's past than anyone will realize, but I'll save the explanation for another time. Keep your eyes open for the journal with the full story synopsis for it.

Assuming enough people are curious about it. :)

Pfft. Of -course- we can spot Hiccup. Oh, the freckles.

The gal in the middle somehow reminds me of Gudrid, who, if your other comments are anything to go by, she is not.

Can't say about the other gentlemen, except to say that they do look quite exceedingly Roman.

Not sure how you'd pull this one off, historically -- the research I've been spurred to by Hitchups has told me that the Romans were kinda over and done with a few centuries before the Vikings cropped up. Should be interesting to see, should you feel the itch to fic. :D

Felicia reminds you of Gudrid? I can totally see that -they both have the city-girl look and dark hair. Though Gudrid is older and bigger than Felicia. And a few classes below her. :XD:
I'm really, really glad the other guys look Roman though. Especially the old guy - I rarely draw old guys but this one happened to turn out looking appropriately old.

The Vikings and Romans overlapped only very slightly. The Roman Empire was already dying down when the Vikings were busting down doors. In the HTTYD books there are Romans - Hiccup is captured in one of them. For this story, though it wasn't mentioned in the synopsis, Rome is already suffering financial problems and many Old Names are falling to ruin. The Vikings are like that final foot stomping them out. :XD:

Have you read the synopsis?

I will be the first to admit that I only read the first book. While I found it amusing, and the Green Death's philosophical turns very interesting, it came off to me as very much a little boy's story. Slime, snails, puppy dog tails, and all. So I didn't borrow the others.

Actually, I totally derped and failed to notice your link until after posting my comment! So, no, didn't look at the synopsis. I will do that now! *swoosh*

Yeah, the first few books I had on audio, which is how I had them on hand despite the very childish catering it had. But you really see Hiccup grow and see the situation get darker as he gets older. Plus, I LOVE the beginning and end of each book with Hiccup's adult voice. It's just chock-full of wisdom.

Baldy looks a lot like the Greek healer in Hitchups. Iason I think. Also, I think you drew the middle girl before, somewhere.

Ah! Yes, Iason! Except, he was Greek, and this Roman guy (the woman's father) is much more calculating and cruel. D:

The middle girl, roman woman, I've never drawn before. It might be the brown curls that make her look a bit like Doris? But other than that the two have little in common. The roman woman is slender and spoiled and vain.

OH! Sansa! She's not even from the same fandom :XD: Haha... well, it is a testament to how one-dimentional my hair skills are. I'm no good with ringlets (haven't put much effort into them before either so...) or braids or even light curls. But yeah, I can see the similarities in poses and hair now. The biggest difference is that Sansa involved a reference and a lot of time and the girl Heather didn't. ;P Good memory!

HEATHER! I know who she is now!

Tell me if I'm wrong, but it's the Heather who's in the fanfic How To Train Your Dragon II: The Dragon Whisperer by inhonoredglory, right? I'm following it right now and I know there's a Heather in that one. I never pictured her that way, but hey, the name went "Lightbulb!"

:) Of course you'd remember eventually! :giggle: I do know of the story, but I don't really follow it (love the artwork that goes with it, though). There's only one story at the moment I'm honestly following; the rest have all kind of fallen out of my hands).

Heather is in the Riders of Berk show, the next episodes that will be airing, in fact. She's a bit infamous because it's been leaked that Hiccup may fall for her, so of course she has the hicstrid fans all in a tizzy. Personally, I think she can only add some much-needed dynamic to whatever Hiccup and Astrid have going on, plus, it's not like they'll actually switch the already established love-interest, so there's really nothing to worry about. I say bring her on. :ahoy:

And that's why you might find her popping up in stories nowadays.

Okay, so just to let you know, I'm a straight-A student but completely and utterly BLONDE. So I seriously have no idea who these people are. I'm getting a niggling feeling that they're out of the books, and I swear I know who Heather is, but it's just not clicking today.

Guess I'll just have to wait for the full story. Which shouldn't be...too hard.

[A half-hour later]

Rrrrrghhh! CAN'T! HANDLE! SUSPENSE!!! :explosion:

As I was saying, I think the Roman girl may make a good Heather character, in light of what Heather represents.

That's okay! You aren't supposed to know who they are (with the exception of Astrid, I hope :XD:). And then there's Hiccup in the upper left with his short, Roman-esque hair and clothing--he may have slipped under the radar. The rest are all necessary OCs (I have to add necessary because I really don't like the unnecessary sort).

That said, I am thinking of maybe making them more book-related, but that just based on after thoughts I've had recently. They already have a book involvement through a canon character (will be revealed later), but in the books Alvin spent some time working with Rome, so I may have him be involved with the centurion (upper right).

The GIRL, haha, right in the middle, may make a good Heather c

I'll get the synopsis out asap, I promise! :meow: Just hold your horses.

That's interesting you are looking at new designs for Hitchups characters and that you also had some other canon deviation ideas. This is an interesting style. I note here you have eyes without pupils. From the designs it seems you had some sort of characters in the Roman Empire theme going on there.

Hmm, did I make new designs for Hitchups characters? I only recall drawing Hiccup in the three states Hitchups states. But yes, those other canon deviation ideas were always in my head; they were just squashed down under the weight of the Hitchups monstrosity.

This one definitely takes place in Rome a lot. That's why Hiccup's hair is so short and, though you can't see it, he's dressed in Roman garb as well.

I've actually been drawing eyes without the pupils for quite a few deviations now :meow:, it goes along with this style I'm evolving into.

You are right-- I was referring to the Hiccup drawing. Sorry that I got confusing there.

I did notice some of your other drawings had pupil-less eyes but I think it was seeing this drawing that it clicked for me that you are using them quite a bit. Some other artists like Captain Cuttlefish have been doing that as well with the eye style.

Good luck with the style evolution and maybe we'll see some of that cannon deviation stuff in the future. I was kind of wondering if this one was going to have some sort of love triangle situation as well based on the two women in the picture-- Astrid and a girl who might be living in Rome and from a more southern ancestry than Berk

Truthfully, pupils always look weird for me - sometimes I throw them in there, but other times they just stress me out too much :XD:. Interesting that the Captain does it too - I never noticed.

And you could say there's a love triangle... but that wouldn't do the situation justice at all. It's all politics and schemes with very little desire (unless you count the Astrid-Hiccup end of things). I'm writing the synopsis now; I may have it up sometime after work (or when everyone else wakes up :XD:).
