"So you want me to hit my head..."

"Aye"

"...on this?"

"Aye, lass."

Stoick stared down at his granddaughter with pride-filled eyes. The pair stood at Raven's Point, just outside the forest on a wide outcropping of stone and grass that overlooked the ocean. They were a safe distance from the overhang itself but close enough to hear the waves crash against seastacks.

Alivia frowned and looked down at the rock gripped in her fingers. It was heavy, and large enough that it required the use of both her pudgy hands to cup it. Her palms were moist and gritty from the dirt that caked the bottom of the stone.

"Won't I get a bruise?" she asked. Her brow had furrowed as though she could already feel the phantom sensation upon her head.

It was Stoick's turn to frown. Things had been going so well thus far. Alivia enthusiastically agreed to go on a walk with her Granddaddy for some "Horrendous Haddock family traditions". She listened attentivly to the stories of his childhood. She ripped up branches and kicked stones along the way with appropriate aggressiveness for a young Viking. She even picked up the rock he presented her with, which was a step further than Hiccup ever made it at that age.

But now she was questioning things, as her father had.

"That's part of being a Viking, lass," he explained. "You gotta show that yer made of stronger stuff. Why, when I was no older'n you I did the same thing. Sure, I got a small bump on my head, but I split that rock right in two!"

Alivia knew this. She must have heard the story at least seven times on the way up. Her attention went back to the rock and she tried to imagine splitting it with her head. The only image she received was her own head splitting. Her frowned deepened.

"How about..." she began slowly, ponderously, in search of another solution, and Stoick was already wincing with the familiar. "I take this rock..."

Alivia spun away from the forest.

"...and I throw it off this cliff! Hyuuh!"

Stoick watched, flummoxed, as the six-year-old tossed the rock as far as she could over the cliff's edge with a victorious bellow.

"Yeah! What now, rock? What-choo got? Huh?" Alivia screamed after the stone as it hurtled down into the ocean.

Stoick stared at the girl a moment longer before his shock melted into a warm smile. Sure, she chose a different solution, just as her father had. But...

"No one bruises my head but me!" Alivia hit herself on the forehead to emphasize her point and Stoick truly grinned.

In the end, she was still a Viking. A Bog Burglar, yes, but also, blessedly, a proud Horrendous Haddock.

And this is why Stoick secretly favors Alivia... and later Roan. Dem fiesty redheads. ;)

"No one bruises my head but ME!"

Two things:

1) I think we can all learn something from this quote.

2) Can this be my life motto?
